Nationalism is an invented tradition, it did not become a prominent ideology until the end of the 18th century and it came about following the revolutions against the tyranny of absolutism.
In contrast with the subjection to autocrats (masters, monarchs, religious leaders), people started to identify with imagined communities aiming to share both culture and power.
